After eight long weeks on the road between Scribner and the Southland, Art and Marion landed in a short-term rental in Redondo Beach. While Marion was fortunate to quickly find an assignment as a stenographer, Art wasn’t so lucky. He applied for job after job but remained unemployed for something close to two years.
Unemployed but not idle. Idle wasn’t in Art Falk’s vocabulary. The compact, energetic man could barely sit still for dinner, let alone languish for months at a time. Instead, Art stayed busy by helping a relative build an apartment over a garage in the city of Bell, a working-class suburb that sits five miles south of downtown L.A. along the west bank of the Los Angeles River. When that was done, Art landscaped the backyard with color flowers and citrus trees — and then moved in. It was Art and Marion’s first California home.
